Leadership Ethics
(Notes from Dr. Myles Munroe)
The Spirit of Leadership
Leadership, a trusted privilege given by followers
- Trapped within every follower is a hidden leader
- All humans poses the instinct and capacity for leadership
- The thinking of a leader is what separates him/her from followers
-True leaders are distinguished by a unique mental attitude
-This controls his/her response to life, danger, crises, disappointments, failures, challenges, and stress
Discipline is a strong leadership attitude
- It is self-imposed standards and restrictions
- It is motivated by a desire that is greater than the alternatives
- The disciplined lifestyle distinguishes leaders from followers
- Leadership spirit cultivates self-control that regulates an individual’s focus
- 2 Timothy 1:7
“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline” - Discipline leads to personal transformation
- Self-control is the hardest to master but reaps the greatest reward
- Discipline is a series of decisions prescribed by a determined destiny
- Discipline and disciple come from the same root, pupil or student
- Vision is the source of the leader’s discipline
- Leaders live with the understanding that:
-He who cannot control his thoughts will never control himself
-He who cannot rule himself will never control life
-He who cannot rule himself will never rule a nation
-He who cannot control himself will be controlled by others
Other Attitudes of True Leaders
- Purpose and passion
- Initiative and priorities

Servant Leadership
Servant leaders
- The servant-leaders are servants first
- Are different from those who are leaders first
- They serve the people they lead
- They are an end in themselves rather than a means to an organizational purpose
- They make sure others’ highest priority needs are being served
What do servant leaders do?
- Devote themselves to serving the needs of organization members.
- Develop followers to bring out the best in them.
- Coach others and encourage their self-expression.
- Focus on meeting the needs of those they lead.
- Facilitate personal growth in all who work with them.
- Listen and build a sense of community.
What are you trying to do?
- Every great achievement starts with a visionary goal
- State the goals and vision of your ministry
- By clearly articulating and restating the goals, leaders give certainty and assurance to others
- You must be prepared to elicit trust
- Leaders do not elicit trust unless he/she has competence and a sustaining spirit
Servant Leadership: Moral Authority
- The dimensions of moral authority
- The essence of moral authority is sacrifice
-Making physical and economic sacrifices (the Body)
-Cultivating an inquisitive mind with no prejudice (the Mind)
-Showing deep respect and love for others (the Heart)
-Subordinating our will to a higher will for the greater good (the Spirit)
- The dimensions of moral authority
-
- Conscience teaches us that ends and means are inseparable
- Conscience introduces us into the world of relationship
- Conscience teaches us that ends and means are inseparable
- Vision and values must be shared before people will be willing to accept institutionalized discipline of structures and systems that embody those of the shared values.
